“The Bee” When Mike discovers that Brick is a spelling wiz and won the school spelling bee, he puts all his efforts into training him to win the regional bee, which could ultimately lead to competing in the Scripps Spelling Bee. But as the family gets set for their road trip to Chicago for the regional bee, Frankie and Mike are horrified when they realize they forgot one thing — Sue’s birthday — on “The Middle,” WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3 (8:30-9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

“The Middle” stars Patricia Heaton as Frankie, Neil Flynn as Mike, Charlie McDermott as Axl, Eden Sher as Sue, Atticus Shaffer as Brick and Chris Kattan as Bob.

Guest starring are Brian Doyle-Murray as Mr. Ehlert, Kiva Jump as Mrs. Thomas, Duane Shepard, Sr. as judge, Keith Gerchak as announcer, Jill E. Alexander as Penny, Ryan Agahee as Sanjit, Noelani Bailey as girl contestant, Harrison Boxley as boy contestant, Gregory Kasyan as kid #1 and Aidan Miner as kid #2.

“The Bee” was written by Eileen Heisler & DeAnn Heline and directed by Ken Whittingham.

“The Middle” is broadcast in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC’s selected HDTV format with a 5.1 channel surround sound and Spanish subtitles via secondary closed captioning. A TV parental guideline will be assigned closer to the airdate.

In the episode, Frankie and Mike (Patricia Heaton, Neil Flynn) are excited to discover that Axl (Charlie McDermott) has found the perfect girlfriend, Morgan (Vega), and that he’s in love. But just as they start to get used to his new, sunny outlook on life, Morgan does the unthinkable and breaks up with him, leaving Axl completely heartbroken.

“The Break Up” premieres on March 10th @ 8:30PM ET/PT on ABC.

I kind of like the relationship developing between Bob and Mike. When Mike threw him out of the house a few weeks back, I was actually a bit taken aback. Sure, Bob’s a bit — okay, a lot awkward, but he has a good heart and he’s a decent guy. And he’s good friends with Frankie.

I think with this episode, ‘The Middle’ strayed further into surreality than we’re used to seeing. I’ve always thought of the show as a surprisingly realistic take on middle class families in middle America, but everything about this episode had reality amped up to the proverbial “eleven.”
…
And it’s not even that the episode didn’t have plenty of laughs, because it did. I loved when Sue yelled at Axl that he was the most irresponsible person she’d ever met, and then handed him a baby to take care of. But the same laughs could have been achieved without having to sacrifice that carefully crafted third dimension for our characters.

There were some authentic moments in the episode, though, like the scene with Mike and Frankie in bed when she realized that she’d become a yelling mom, and she didn’t want to be that. It was pure Mike when he said, “Well, it’s too late now.” And the video Frankie made to show them how horrible their behavior was backfired on her so masterfully, that I couldn’t help myself laughing by the end of it.

As long as the heart of the show remains strong, it’ll be fine. Just keep an eye on that reality check light, please.

Episode Synopsis: THE MIDDLE “Christmas” Episode 10 – While Frankie focuses on rehearsing for a solo in her church’s midnight Christmas mass, Mike takes over handling the chores of setting up the Heck family Christmas. But Frankie becomes a bit jealous when it seems that Mike is doing a better job at organizing the holiday then she would have done. Meanwhile, Frankie and Mike try to help Brick overcome a problem in order to get into the holiday spirit, on “The Middle,” TUESDAY, DECEMBER 9 (8:30-9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
