Growing Over its Most-Recent Original, ABC’s “The Middle” Finishes No. 1 at 8:30pm in Adults 18-49, Beating Fox’s Finale of “Human Target”

“The Middle” (8:30-9:00 p.m.)

Surging from its lead-in by 38% at 8:30 p.m., ABC’s “The Middle” won its half-hour among Adults 18-49 (2.2/7), beating competition including the second half-hour of Fox’s season finale of “Human Target” (2.1/7). ABC freshman “The Middle” also beat out its comedy competition in the slot, defeating CBS’ freshman “Accidentally On Purpose” by 16% (1.9/6). In fact among young Adults, the ABC freshman comedy has been the highest-rated scripted show in its half-hour on 3 of its last 4 original telecasts.

· “The Middle” was up from its most recent original telecast by 8% in Total Viewers (6.7 million vs. 6.2 million) and by 10% in Adults 18-49 (2.2/7 vs. 2.0/6).

Building on its lead-in at 8:30 p.m. (+13%), ABC’s “The Middle” (2.7/8) finished as the No. 1 regular program in its half-hour among Adults 18-49, beating the second half-hour of Fox’s “Human Target” premiere by 8% (2.5/7) and NBC’s “Mercy” by 69% (1.6/5).

“The Middle” achieved series-high numbers among Adults 18-49 and across each of the key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54).

Building on its lead-in at 8:30 p.m. (a “Modern Family” repeat) against holiday specials on NBC (“Christmas in Rockefeller Center”) and CBS (“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”) and an original “So You Think You Dance” on Fox, ABC’s “The Middle” was up week to week by 8% in Total Viewers (6.4 million vs. 5.9 million) and by 18% in Adults 18-49 (2.0/6 vs. 1.7/6). The ABC freshman comedy drew more overall viewers than Fox’s veteran “Dance” (6.2 million) and finished No. 2 in its half-hour with Adults 25-54 (2.6/6) and Men 18-49 (1.7/5).

CBS’ “The New Adventures of Old Christine” and “Gary Unmarried” averaged a 4.6/8 overall and did a 2.4 rating to win the 18-49 demo for the hour. ABC’s “Modern Family” repeat and a new “The Middle” finished third overall and second in the 18-49 demo. FOX’s “So You Think You Can Dance” had a 3.5/6 for fourth. The season finale of The CW’s “America’s Next Top Model” had a 2.4/4 and drew 3.66 million viewers.

Both won their time slots, besting shows such as NBC’s Mercy, CBS comedies The New Adventures of Old Christine and Gary Unmarried, as well as Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance and The CW’s America’s Next Top Model. Not a bad showing, but we’ll see how they hold up in subsequent weeks.
