And it resonates with much of the country in an economic pinch that seems standard issue for the Hecks.

“But the show is not so much about the bad economy,” says Heaton. “It’s about the American attitude of resilience, and trying to find a new way to do things and put a positive spin on it.”

“It’s from the mom’s point of view, and it’s not with a bumbling dad who can never do anything right [compared to "Everybody Loves Raymond"],” she says. “It’s about trying to keep the marriage lively and raise the kids right, but not having enough time and energy to do any of those things.”

I consider this a classic for this freshman series. It focuses on the three children and their eccentricities with a focus on little Brick (the standout Atticus Shaffer), who just doesn’t have the best social skills. Despite the efforts of his mom (Patricia Heaton) and dad (Neil Flynn), Brick struggles to make friends. And he does so in the most adorable way. Meanwhile, another son, Axl (yes, that’s really his name), toys with his mother’s emotions, unbeknownst to him. Instead of giving her his football jersey, like his fellow teammates gave to their mothers, he gives it to a girl. Gasp! Everyone gets a chance to shine, with all the action ending up at a neighborhood block party and a lawn mower race. If you’re looking for a show during this lull of holiday shows and repeats, check it out.
