Growing Over its Most-Recent Original, ABC’s “The Middle” Finishes No. 1 at 8:30pm in Adults 18-49, Beating Fox’s Finale of “Human Target”

“The Middle” (8:30-9:00 p.m.)

Surging from its lead-in by 38% at 8:30 p.m., ABC’s “The Middle” won its half-hour among Adults 18-49 (2.2/7), beating competition including the second half-hour of Fox’s season finale of “Human Target” (2.1/7). ABC freshman “The Middle” also beat out its comedy competition in the slot, defeating CBS’ freshman “Accidentally On Purpose” by 16% (1.9/6). In fact among young Adults, the ABC freshman comedy has been the highest-rated scripted show in its half-hour on 3 of its last 4 original telecasts.

· “The Middle” was up from its most recent original telecast by 8% in Total Viewers (6.7 million vs. 6.2 million) and by 10% in Adults 18-49 (2.2/7 vs. 2.0/6).

CBS’ “The New Adventures of Old Christine” and “Accidentally on Purpose” both averaged a 4.0/7 for CBS (with “Accidentally” improving on its lead-in in the key demo). NBC’s “Minute to Win It” had a 3.6/6 for third, edging out ABC’s repeats of “Modern Family“ and “The Middle.” The CW’s new “America’s Next Top Model” did a 2.3/4 for fifth.

California Chronicle talks about three strong comedy series that debuted this year and one of them is The Middle.

‘The Middle’

There’s no question that “Modern Family” is quickly becoming the best comedy on TV, but “The Middle” (8:30 p.m. Wednesday, WTAE) needs more support.

“The Middle” is a loopy, single-camera comedy about a family in Middle America that’s scraping by on luck and love. What makes the show unique among prime-time series is not its style of humor, which bears some resemblance to “Malcolm in the Middle” told from a mom’s point of view. It’s the emphasis on the children in the family. Other than the half-man on CBS’s “Two and a Half Men,” kids have been largely AWOL from prime-time broadcast network comedies for about a decade and they haven’t been a focus since “Malcolm.”

As relatable as the travails of mom Frankie Heck (Patricia Heaton) may be, it’s the stories and characterizations of the Heck kids that make “The Middle” so much fun to watch. Has there ever been as wildly accurate a depiction of teenage boys as Axl (Charlie McDermott), who moves with the leisurely speed of an unmotivated turtle and complains with a mix of whine and gusto? And upbeat Sue (Eden Sher) has a wild-eyed optimism no matter how many times she’s failed before. Oddball Brick (Atticus Shaffer), who looks a lot like Dewey from “Malcolm,” takes weirdness to a new level with repeated, under-his-breath whispers of single words he just said aloud.

So far, ABC seems supportive of “The Middle” despite its low ratings, largely the result of having horrible “Hank” (now-canceled) as a lead-in. But more people need to find this hidden gem and help it escape middle-of-the-pack obscurity. “The Middle” deserves to be nearer the top of the ratings heap.

Those who subscribe to the familiar adage “Dying is easy, comedy is hard” have not been hanging around lately with Ray Romano. The star and inspiration behind the hit family comedy “Everybody Loves Raymond” has discovered something far more difficult than comedy or sustaining a hit network sitcom. It’s developing his Act 2.

Romano is grappling with the demands of being the creative force behind TNT’s “Men of a Certain Age,” his first TV venture since 2005, when “Raymond” ended its nine-year run on CBS. Toning down his familiar everyman comic persona, he is leaping from the plush neon flashiness of network TV to the less glossy and more frugal regions of cable, and with a risky concept. The show, which also stars Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula, revolves around three friends descending not too gracefully into middle age. Finding the proper tone has made Romano a bit anxious.

“Yes, I’m nervous about this,” he said, taking a break on the Paramount Studios set of the dramedy, which he produced and created with Mike Royce. “There are so many things I’m worried about. Will people watch? What will people think of me in this role? What if it doesn’t get picked up? What if it does get picked up and we’ve got to do another season?”

He paused, then smiled: “There’s no winning. There’s only less losing.”

“I got offered game show hosts, or guest arcs on other shows,” he said. “I didn’t get offered any sitcom vehicles, and I didn’t seek that out. There were films I wanted to do, but they didn’t want me, and the films that wanted me I didn’t want to do.”

That might come as a surprise, as “Everybody Loves Raymond” was so embraced by viewers and critics. But his “Everybody Loves Raymond” costars have had their post-”Raymond” struggles, as well. Patricia Heaton, who played Ray Barone’s wife, Debra, already has one failed sitcom (Fox’s “Back to You”) and her freshman ABC comedy “The Middle” is struggling despite good reviews. The title of Brad Garrett’s ratings-deficient Fox comedy ” ‘Til Death” says it all.

Building on its lead-in at 8:30 p.m. (a “Modern Family” repeat) against holiday specials on NBC (“Christmas in Rockefeller Center”) and CBS (“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”) and an original “So You Think You Dance” on Fox, ABC’s “The Middle” was up week to week by 8% in Total Viewers (6.4 million vs. 5.9 million) and by 18% in Adults 18-49 (2.0/6 vs. 1.7/6). The ABC freshman comedy drew more overall viewers than Fox’s veteran “Dance” (6.2 million) and finished No. 2 in its half-hour with Adults 25-54 (2.6/6) and Men 18-49 (1.7/5).

The news of ABC ordering more episodes of the Wednesday night comedy block — sans Hank — comes a day after CBS announced the pick ups of The Good Wife and NCIS: Los Angeles.

The Middle, starring Patricia Heaton, opened with a modest 8.7 million viewers and pulled 6.78 million in Wednesday night’s airing.

Both won their time slots, besting shows such as NBC’s Mercy, CBS comedies The New Adventures of Old Christine and Gary Unmarried, as well as Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance and The CW’s America’s Next Top Model. Not a bad showing, but we’ll see how they hold up in subsequent weeks.
