I consider this a classic for this freshman series. It focuses on the three children and their eccentricities with a focus on little Brick (the standout Atticus Shaffer), who just doesn’t have the best social skills. Despite the efforts of his mom (Patricia Heaton) and dad (Neil Flynn), Brick struggles to make friends. And he does so in the most adorable way. Meanwhile, another son, Axl (yes, that’s really his name), toys with his mother’s emotions, unbeknownst to him. Instead of giving her his football jersey, like his fellow teammates gave to their mothers, he gives it to a girl. Gasp! Everyone gets a chance to shine, with all the action ending up at a neighborhood block party and a lawn mower race. If you’re looking for a show during this lull of holiday shows and repeats, check it out.

Right from the beginning, The Middle had me in familiar territory. I remember rushing around the house gathering trash and trying to get it out to the curb before the trash truck finished at the neighbor’s house. And I remember just missing it; what a horrible feeling that was.

From there, while I was still able to enjoy the episode for the laughs it offered, I was just as equally terrified. As a parent, I’ve often wondered just how close we are to having the state take our children away. How innocent a comment or statement would it take before these agencies swoop down on our lives with all their self-righteous glory and scare the living crap out of us that they’re going to tear our families apart?

As always, Sue was a highlight of the episode. She spent most of it crying at the prospect of the family being torn asunder, but still got in a great visual gag when she ran into the sliding glass door. I also totally agree with Frankie’s assessment that this is why you don’t clean glass doors. Those things are dangerous.

But when Brick innocently informs his school that his scratch was caused by his mother throwing a beer bottle at him, a social worker is called to look into the matter – sending Frankie into a panic to give off the image that the Hecks are a picture-perfect family. Meanwhile, Bob must help an uncooperative Mr. Ehlert shoot a new commercial advertising the car lot, on “The Middle,” WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18 (8:30-9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
